Depression is one of the most common struggles that humans experience. The world health organization estimates that 300 million people worldwide suffer with depression each year. One thing is for sure, it is not something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. In my opinion, aside from genetic and physiological predispositions, the underlying cause of a lot of depression is one of three things or a combination there of.
First are negative beliefs about self, such as I’m lazy or I’m a terrible person etc. If a person spends all day every day repeating this type of thought in their head, what are the chances that person is going to feel good about themselves? Second are losses or perceived losses. Let’s say a person lost their job or recently lost an important relationship. This produces a natural grief response thus resulting in that person feeling depressed. Even though grief is a perfectly natural and normal response to loss, sometimes it is necessary to seek professional help to address the overwhelming feelings that accompany grief. The third cause are failures. When a person experiences a failure in life this usually results in either triggering or producing a negative belief about self. Whatever the case, I believe these three causes are at the root of a lot of depression. The good news is EMDR therapy is very good at resolving these types of issues.
- It is important to keep in mind that not all depression falls within these causes and one should always seek immediate assistance if you are having thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else. If you believe your depression is the result of some unresolved past experience, recent or past losses or a lot of negative beliefs about yourself, I would very much encourage you to contact me for a consultation.
